Circuit 3/ Sintra

In Sintra and its neighbourhoods there are many other places to visit.
In the town centre you will find many cafés and restaurants, shops, the tourist office, and a number of galleries and workshops.

- Convento dos Capuchos
Just follow the directions from the town centre. This monastery is located in the heart of the mountain. It was built in the 16th century by D. Álvaro of Castro by wish of his father. The cells were dug in the rocks, and the walls were covered with cork for insulation. There is a surprisingly peaceful atmosphere.

- Peninha
After the convent the road continues towards Peninha. At the top (486 m), there is a small chapel dedicated to Saint Saturnin, built towards the end of the 17th century, with a baroque interior. The view is splendid from there.

Palácio de Seteais

- Quinta da Regaleira
Situated 5 mn from the town centre, this "Quinta" was built at the beginning of the 20th century by António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro, a man who had accumulated a great fortune in Brazil and who chose an Italian architect-scenographer - Manini - to carry out the realization of his dream. The property is dominated by the Palace but there are also the gardens with caves, statues, a maze, the well, the lake, towers... as if the whole property was the setting for an opera. The style is a mixture of Gothic, Manuelin and Renaissance; symbolism, mythology, mysticism, all of these are present here.

Please note: There is no parking and the visits have set schedules (to get information go to the tourist office in the the town centre).

- Palácio de Seteais
After Regaleira on the right you will find the Seteais palace-hotel. It was built by the Dutch consul Daniel Gildmeester, during the last quarter of the 18th century. The arch between the two wings dates from the 19th century, and was built by the 2nd owner while enlarging the building. It has become a 5 star hotel, and in summer it becomes one of the theatres for the Music and Dance Festival of Sintra.

- The Palace and Quinta of Monserrate
It is after the palace of Seteais, on the same road, approximately 4 kms from the town centre. From 1856 Monserrate was the property of an Englishman Francis Cook, who used the services of an English architect for the construction of a romantic palace. All around the palace there is an exotic park with plants coming from all over the world. You can visit this park which is a true botanical garden.
