A Walk across Ericeira IV

Streets and Chapels

Walking through the narrow picturesque streets of the village, is the best way to know each corner of Ericeira and especially its white chapels.

You will thus have the opportunity to feel the simple and deep fervour of most Portuguese people yet.

The tour starts at the Largo dos Navegantes and ends at the São Sebastião Chapel, where we pick up the local bus, which will take us back to the village center .

3/ Cultural Centre :
The former Grande Casino of Ericeira existed from 1919 to 1927 and was later transformed into cinema. It stayed in operation until the early eighties.
By then the building, already quite degradated, was acquired by the Town Hall of Mafra, reconstructed and reopened its doors as Cultural Center Jaime Lobo e Silva on the 31st of July, 1995.

4/
The Harbour Wall :
The imposing harbor wall semicircles the Fishermen Beach. Overlooking the sea, the building of the harbor master in its colonial style still reminds an glorious époque, when Ericeira was considered one of the most important harbors of Portugal

5/ Santo Antonio Chapel :
Santo António Chapel, also known as Our Lady of the Blessed Journey Chapel, already existed in 1609. A stone, placed above the main portal says the chapel was renovated in 1844.

Point of interest is the wooden ceiling with paintings dating from the 18th century.

7/ The Pillory of Ericeira :
The pillory of Ericeira is an ancient monument in Manuelino style, dating from around 1513. After the extinction of the district of Ericeira in 1855, it was removed, but later in 1924 re-erected. It still shows the bracelets, where convicts where tied to.

8/ The Parish Church :
The Parish Church, dedicated to Saint Peter, already existed in the 15th century. In 1658, the former small chapel was transformed into its actual dimensions. Most of its silver decoration was lost, when Napoleon applied a tax in 1808 to the Portuguese kingdom.
