Circuit 7/ Évora, Estremoz

In Évora there are still important pieces of the former walls of the city as well as the gates. Dating back to Roman time, they were strengthened by the Wisigoths. There is also a part of the medieval wall as well as one dating back to the 17th century from 1650-1670.

- Nossa Senhora da Graça
Built in the Italian Renaissance style. It is a quite unique building, with a sturdy-looking façade and a heavy portico ending in a double open triangular pediment, with angels along the top. On each side, sitting on the top of the pilasters, are four muscular atlantes supporting enormous spheres with burning torches. Inside, your attention is drawn to the area around the high altar, with windows made of Estremoz marble, carved by Nicolau de Chanterenne.

- S.João Evangelista (Lóios)
Gothic and Manuelin, built in 1485. In the nave there are 18th century azulejos and the choir is 17th - 18th century. In the church you will be able to see several tombs. Next to the church, there is the Dos Lóios convent with a neo-classic front. The convent has a Manuelin ground floor and a Renaissance style first floor. The chapter room was built by one of the most important Manuelin architects. The Loios Pousada now occupies the former convent.

- Church Do Espírito Santo
: It is situated on University grounds, it was built in1566. Inside there are chapels with gilded wood altarpieces from the 18th century as well as azulejos, some of which date back to the same time.

- Convent Da Cartuxa
Built in the16th century. Inside you will be able to see gilded wood in the choir.

- Convent Do Espinheiro
15th century building. The choir dates back to the 17th century and is decorated with azulejos. In an outside chapel you will find Garcia de Resende's tomb (the king's secretary, a poet and a chronicler - 1470-1536). Now it is a magnificent hotel set in a beautiful garden.

- Chapel São Brás
The Capela de São Brás, inside the Belver Castle is a fortified church dating back to the second half of the 16th century, with cylindrical buttresses and Manuelin ornamental elements, a mixture of gothic and moorish style.

Évora - Universidade do Espírito Santo

- The University
Evora is also famous for its university, the second oldest in the country after Coimbra. Founded in 1559 by the future king Dom Henrique, great masters such as Molina and Barradas shared their knowledge here and the Universidade do Espirito Santo enjoyed many prestigious years enlightening the privileged both intellectually and spiritually, until the Jesuits were expelled and the doors closed in the 18th century, not to re-open until 1973.
Generally you can see most of the university. A marble gate in toscane columns gives access to the central patio formed by a classic cloister with a double gallery onto which open rooms that are still equipped with the old professor's chairs and benches from the scholastic days, and some magnificent allegorical azulejos referring to the various subjects that were lectured here. Opposite the gate is the front of the Dos "Actos", an 18th century room where ceremonies took place. The Igreja do Colegio was carefully adapted for teaching purposes, as can be seen from the pulpit placed in the middle of the hall and its excellent acoustics.

Museu de Évora

- Museu de Évora
Installed in the former Archbishop Palace this well stocked regional museum displays Roman archeological finds, Romanesque and Gothic architectural fragments, Portuguese and Flemish pictures of the 16th-18th centuries, applied and decorative art, and two cenotaphs by Nicolas Chanterène for Dom Álvares de Costa (1535) and Dom Afonso de Portugal (1537).

- Museum of Decorative Art
It has existed since 1956 in the church da Mercês. The nave and the choir of the church are decorated with 18th century azulejos and gilded wood. In the museum there is a collection of crafts and arts, as well as religious objects.

- Museum of Sacred Art
Installed in one of the cathedral's towers, it has a vast collection of sacred objects.

In the city there are still other palaces from different times that can be visited, whereas others can be recommended for the outside architecture.
